records

The following is a list of the records we have released, along with information on tracks, times, place of recording, personnel, artwork credits, and a brief explanation of the name of the record. Next to each song there is a link to the lyrics of the song. The lyrics page also has explanations of many of those songs as well as artwork for each song that our friends have made for us. The original plan was to release a discography/collection of sorts, with the artwork and explanations and lyrics forming the content of a 7 by 7 book that would accompany the discs. While that would still be great, it proved just too expensive to finance given the difficulty that we have had getting personnel who could tour in support of the release. We held onto the material in case we did line up a touring drummer, but the situation hasn't changed really. So, we decided to provide mp3s for all the releases before the most recent and links to the lyrics and artwork and explanations and what not. Hopefully you will find them interesting. We did not post mp3s for the two latest recordings because we thought it would be unfair to the people that potentially relased those songs to undermine the chances of breaking even on their investent before they even made the investment. We really like having our releases on vinyl, and we know of at least a few listeners that do as well, so we thought it the best thing to do. Any way, we still hope to find a way to tour, but past experience hasn't given us any reason to think it'll happen. You can also find several unreleased tracks listed at the very end.

no hugging = no learning

Our first release, 'no hugging = no learning', came out as a cd-r demo in 2004. The title comes from a phrase invented by the writers of seinfeld. They meant that they wanted to do a sitcom that had no hugging or learning as a necessary component to the end of every show. While I loved their result, I thought that it would be a better philosophical proposition to rewrite it to mean that hugging (and thus empathy) was/is integral to learning and thus understanding. There were only 30 or so and it's been sold out forever. it was recorded by hank charles (tulsa) in march of 2004 and had 7 songs.
Design and printing by Doug. The CD-r had a canvas bag with screen printing of a lonely turtle floating in the ocean.
instruments: doug-drums, daniel-bass, eric-guitar,vocals

angelus novus

Our second release, 'angelus novus', came out as a cd-r demo in 2004. angelus novus was a painting by paul klee that was commented on by walter benjamin as the angel of history. we put four of the tracks from the first demo on it because the first demo is sold out and we wanted people to have those songs. I have no idea how many were in each run, but I'd guess there were around 80 total. the newer songs were recorded by carl amburn (norman/moore) in october of 2004 and there are four of them making a total of 8, running 35 minutes. sold out.
Design by Doug - printing by doug and eric. there are three versions, the original has a screen printed gatefold jacket, the british version has a screen printed white canvas bag with fuscia ink and the CDs were labeled, the overrun of the british version was the same but used brown ink.

the politics of lonely

The third release was a CD-r called 'the politics of lonely', which is a phrase i borrowed from a weakerthans song. I took it to mean that even when we are alone, isolated, as a way of life, we still have a (political) effect as a result of our seclusion. It had 3 songs and runs about 23 minutes. recorded by Chris Harris (norman) in may of 2005. There were at most 30. It's sold out, obviously.
Design by Dustin Cleveland. The release had a chipboard cover, folded, with another chipboard sleeve around it. Some of them had some white paint on them, and some of them have our name hand stamped on them.

all tracks recorded by stephen egerton at Armstrong Recording Studios in december 2008.
the title comes from a description of the opening to the plot of steinbeck's 'the grapes of wrath' - i have no idea whether the phrase appears in the actual book. it's meant to apply both to my own decision to move out west to california, from oklahoma, (the same journey of countless okies in the book's historical era) and to the genre of the zine, the individual instances of which can be both incredibly meaningful and entirely generic and cliche, usually at the same time. it's hard not to get cynical because of the overload of so many people writing in what is supposed to be a deeply personal and intimate form.
artwork by jared flaming. printed by eric and stepen and sue.
instruments: craig-drums, chris-bass, eric-guitar,vocals

Side A
  1. conception - lyrics
  2. go west - lyrics

'blood meridian' is the title of a book by cormac mccarthy, about the travels of a murderous band of cowboys through the very much unsettled and uncivilized landscape of the southwest US and northwest Mexico. It is a very very bloody book, as was the history it describes.
